When Your Relationship With Food Feels Painful or Exhausting
You may feel stuck in cycles of restriction, bingeing, guilt, or constant preoccupation with food and your body.
It can feel overwhelming, isolating, and hard to talk about—even when you desperately want things to be different.
I offer virtual therapy and EMDR for people in California who are struggling with eating disorders and body image concerns.
What This Can Feel Like
Struggles with food and body image are rarely just about food. They often reflect deeper emotional pain, stress, control, self-worth, or past experiences that have never fully been processed.
You might notice:
Constant thoughts about food, eating, or your body
Feeling guilt, shame, or anxiety after eating
Cycles of restriction, overeating, or bingeing
Feeling out of control around food at times
Avoiding social situations involving food
A persistent sense of not feeling “good enough” in your body
Using food, restriction, or control as a way to cope emotionally
You are not alone in this, and you are not defined by these patterns.
How Therapy Helps
In therapy, we focus on understanding what your relationship with food and your body is doing for you emotionally—not just what it looks like on the surface.
Together, we work on building awareness of the patterns that keep you stuck, while also developing safer, more supportive ways to cope with stress, emotions, and self-criticism.
When appropriate, I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help process underlying experiences that may be contributing to shame, anxiety, or emotional distress connected to the body and self-image.
The goal is not control—it is relief, stability, and a more peaceful relationship with yourself.
What Can Change
Over time, therapy can help you:
Experience less shame and self-criticism
Reduce the intensity of food and body preoccupation
Feel more emotionally regulated during stress
Build a more compassionate relationship with your body
Break out of restrictive or binge-restrict cycles
Develop healthier coping strategies for emotional distress
Healing is not about achieving perfection. It is about feeling more free.
If you’re struggling with your relationship to food or your body, you don’t have to go through it alone.
Even if you’re unsure whether it “counts” as an eating disorder, support can still help.
